And He said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23)
It wasn’t until recently that I found out the appropriate name for the “double-seated” bicycle. The rider on the back seat, has no control over the steering. If they did, how disastrous would that be? The handlebars are in a fixed position, and serve the purpose of supporting the upper body while enjoying the ride. The pedals however, do work and you can still get some good exercise benefits out of the bike ride. Unfortunately sometimes ones vision can be obscured to what lies ahead especially if the front rider is a lot taller or bigger than you. This leaves the back rider clueless as to if there is a potential collision ahead or if the roads are safe. They have to trust that the person steering will keep them safe and out of harms way at all times. Because I am a christian, I love when God gives me a message in the simplest of things. He opens my spiritual eyes so that I can apply His word to my day to day walk.
Just like the tandem bike riders, when we decide to follow Christ, we have to trust that He will always steer us in the right direction. Sometimes our vision is blocked by our own agenda and the cares of this world that we can’t see all the danger that may lie ahead of us. We may be in a dangerous situation because of our own doing yet God keeps us safe every step of the way. Like the tandem bike riders, lean and depend on the handlebars of faith to support you and trust the steering of Jesus who will lead you down the path of righteousness for His name’s sake (Psm 23:3). Even when you can’t see it working out for you because your vision is blocked, trust God to take care of you and know that He will never steer you wrong! Thanks as always for reading.
